How to Winterize Your Septic System
4 min read
Cold weather can wreak havoc on septic systems. Frozen pipes, compacted soil, and reduced bacterial activity can all lead to problems if you don't prepare. Here's how to protect your system through the winter months.
Before Winter: Preparation Steps
- Get your tank pumped. If you're due for pumping, do it before the ground freezes. Frozen ground makes it harder and more expensive to access the tank.
- Insulate exposed components. Cover risers, lids, and any exposed pipes with insulating blankets or mulch (straw, leaves, or hay). A 12-inch layer of mulch over the tank and drain field helps prevent freezing.
- Fix leaks now. Dripping faucets and running toilets send a constant trickle of water through the system, which can freeze in pipes before reaching the tank.
- Don't compact the soil. Avoid driving, parking, or snowmobiling over your septic tank and drain field. Compacted soil loses its insulating air pockets and freezes deeper.
During Winter: Ongoing Tips
- Use water regularly. Regular water flow keeps the system warm and active. If you're leaving the house vacant for an extended period, have the tank pumped before you go.
- Spread laundry loads out. Don't do all your laundry in one day — spread it throughout the week to maintain consistent warm water flow.
- Keep snow cover over the drain field. Snow is a natural insulator. Don't plow or shovel snow off the drain field area.
What to Do if Your System Freezes
If you suspect a frozen pipe or tank, call a septic professional immediately. Signs include:
- Drains suddenly stop working
- Toilets won't flush
- Gurgling sounds from plumbing
- Sewage odors inside the house
Do NOT try to thaw pipes with open flames, hot water, or electric heaters. A professional can use specialized equipment to safely thaw the system without causing damage.
